A Moment in the Field: Ida-Viru County<\/div>\n

This post is slightly different from the previous ones, but still worth sharing! Archaeological fieldwork does not always mean abundant artefacts or major discoveries \u2013 sometimes an entire weekend is spent in fields, looking into test pits that reveal nothing but archaeological \u201cemptiness\u201d and layers of multicoloured clay.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To document this experience, I chose a few images from hundreds of photographs and combined them into a collage, giving an idea of what a low-find, yet systematically recorded fieldwork looks like. I also added photos of the surrounding landscape, which, through its patterns and colours, offers a nice view.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Although it may initially seem that nothing was found, it is important to emphasise that zero information is still information! Fieldwork of this kind helps map areas where no archaeological layer is present and, among other things, refines our understanding of past settlement patterns and land use.<\/div>\n
